    Hey fellow bee folks!

I think I caught a swarm this afternoon.  When I say 'think' I mean know I got a swarm but can't be sure I got the queen with them.  This is my first attempt at this so I have to admit I don't know what I'm doing.

I put them in a medium box, because that's all I had and put an old honey super w/ some frames partially full on top and a pollen patty on top of that.

I'm wondering whether I need to do anything in particular to insure they stick around.  Any advice from people who are knowledgable with the process??

    Hi Chuck,

Nice that you got your first swarm, congratulations, now the real fun starts. There are some products out there for holding queen colonies together but by the time you accessed them the issue will be resolved by the bees.   Temp-Queen is one such product.

If you have a mated queen, she will start laying in a few days and you can take a peak maybe after a week to look for eggs and slightly later young larva.  So I would allow her a few days to fatten up and find a spot to start laying or not.  This coming Saturday would be a good day to do your first check since it's due to arm up and stop raining.  If you don't see any signs of the queen's work or have problems seeing eggs wait a bit longer and check again.   If she is really missing your options are to add a frame of eggs (if you have another colony) or combine them with that colony or get a new queen.

Keep your fingers crossed because most time you do get the queen. She could have been an unmated virgin queen that needs to mate which will take a bit longer before she can get going.

    Good Luck,  james
